Sometimes
by
Steve Mount

She left the toy on the floor
And left to have a drink of water
When she returned, it was gone
Snatched by an older boy
She asked for the toy back
He said No
Sometimes there are no second chances

She said she didn't want to play soccer
Too much work, too much mud
She found out her new best friend was playing
She asked if she could still get in
All the slots were full
They said No
Sometimes there are no second chances

She wrote the answer on her hand
Worried her memory would fail her
She got the question right, but looked to be sure
And the teacher caught her
She tried to explain
The principal said No
Sometimes there are no second chances

She kissed him on the college green
Lost in the moment, in the day
As she opened her eyes, she saw her boyfriend
A hundred feet away, staring at them, fuming
It meant nothing she said
He said No
Sometimes there are no second chances

She yelled at the girl
For losing her hat in the wind
Made her cry
She knelt down, and hugged her tight
I'm so sorry, she said - it's just a hat
It's OK mommy, she said
I'll always give you a second chance.

This poem was written for a poetry group, in July, 2000. The idea for the poem was Second Chances.
